The letter that gets read
Why a template that disputes everything gets treated as frivolous, and what a specific letter contains instead. With the paragraph that does the work.
There is a whole industry selling dispute letter templates, and most of them share one flaw: they dispute everything at once, in language that reads as if a machine produced it. That is the fastest way to have your dispute set aside, and it is written into the statute.
The word that costs people a month
Under FCRA 611(a)(3), an agency may decline to investigate a dispute it reasonably determines to be frivolous or irrelevant, including where you have failed to provide sufficient information to investigate. They have to tell you within five business days if they do.
A letter that lists nine items and says each one is "inaccurate and unverifiable" gives them nothing to investigate. A letter about one item, stating a specific fact, does.
What a specific letter contains
- One item. Named, with the account number as it appears on the report, and the agency you are writing to.
- The specific error. Not that it is inaccurate. What is inaccurate about it.
- The truth. What the correct information is, if you know it.
- What proves it. Copies, never originals.
- The ask. Reinvestigate under FCRA 611 and send the written result.
The paragraph that does the work
Compare these two. The first is what a template produces. The second is what a person produces after twenty minutes with the report and a calendar.
I dispute the following inaccurate and unverifiable items on my credit report and request their immediate deletion under my rights.
Account 4417, reported by Northgate Bank, shows a date first opened of 12 March 2023. I did not open this account. I lived in Ohio until 4 August 2024 and have never held an account with this lender. I enclose a copy of my lease for that period. Please reinvestigate under FCRA 611 and send me the written result.
The second one is shorter. It is also almost impossible to characterise as frivolous, because it contains a checkable assertion and a document.
One item, one letter
Nine items means nine letters. That feels like more work and it is, but a single letter with nine items has one outcome for all nine, and if that outcome is unhelpful you have lost thirty days on all of them at once. Separate letters fail separately.
Then send it so the date is provable
Tracked, with the receipt kept. The clock runs from arrival, not from posting, and the day it arrives is the day you write on the calendar. Everything about the thirty day clock is here, and the complete method is here, free, including the parts a template seller would charge you for.
